Copycat
I heard that Hello Kitty is now beloved in more than 30 countries, and this is the 30th anniversary year of the birth of Kitty. Great! ...Sorry, I'm not so much interested in it. But I've been wanting to say only one thing about Hello Kitty for these 30 years.
Kitty's design was just a crib from this!!!
This is "Musti" created by the Belgian animator/director Ray Goossens (1924-1998). Musti was started as an animation series on TV in 1968, and its picture books were also published. I read some of that books and loved it in my childhood.
Although it is evident to everybody that Kitty was an imitation of Musti, Sanrio, the publisher of Hello Kitty have not touched on it.
It is said that the total copyright fee for Hello Kitty reaches around 15 billion yen (13.7 million USD) per year, and Sanrio got 23.7 billion yen (21.6 million USD) gross sales in second quarter of 2004. I wonder why they don't feel shady about hiding the fact.

Hi, i'm from belgium myself, and should say that i've also always wondered which was first.
It did seem to me that it was a blatant ripoff, but because hello kitty had such a massive following, (an almost cult-like status, even) that perhaps musty was the actual ripoff.
I was sort of surprised to see that i'm not the only one that remembers Musti, and i'm even more surprised that you're from japan, and not belgium...

I knew it! It's proved that at least two persons have thought like that... Actually, I think some other Japanese people also think so.
Musti's picture books were reissued in recent years in Japan, but unfortunately, it's not so popular like Hello Kitty.
Anyway, I also surprised that you who are in the original country of Musti think like me.

I am wondering how one can prove that this is the Belgian cat and not the Japanese one. Why should it be the the Japanese one ? Use of countries of origin is to avoid the name of one or the other.

I'm a Japanese living in Japan.
I'm not an expert on this kind of things, but it appears to me
"Musti" itself was just a crib from "Miffy",
which was created in 1955 by Dick Bruna, a Dutch picture book artist.

There are lots of people in Japan who were confused by the similarity of Musti and Miffy in their childhood. Many of them believed that they were friends appeared in the same picture books.

IMO it shouldn't be a big deal and I don't think Sanrio should address the issue, even if it is true that Kitty White has coorelations with either of these characters.
Consider the concept of artistry - writers, musicians, artists - usually they all have muses and inspirations that they draw off of as they create their own pieces.
Besides, Sanrio has taken Hello Kitty's classic design and expanded it beyond a cute little white cat dressed in a red outfit. Kitty now takes on many different morphisms (mermaid, butterfly, chef, RABBIT, etc.) - it is what her character does. What's wrong with that? I don't think Kitty ever has to be explained.
The beauty of Sanrio characters is their lack of attachment to a detailed biography so that anyone can take these characters and make them their own.
Sure, Sanrio spends lots to protect their licensed characters. I don't blame them for wanting to secure the authenticity of their products.
If Kitty is indeed a ripoff - I think they did a good job cause she's much cuter than Musti or Miffy.
30 years and running seems pretty awesome to me. Thanks for letting me share my opinion.

There is a reason why I said that Musti is an original Kitty. Sanrio has once stolen obviously the design from Miffy before they made Kitty. See the center of the picture below. Though it's unclear in this picture, it had a "X" shaped mouth.

I think that Sanrio is reflecting the feature of Japanese companies. Although they always focus their efforts on extending someone's ideas, they cannot create something from nothing by themselves.

I just read an interview with Dick Bruna (the creator of Miffy or Nijntje in Holland (where he and I are both from) and he explains that he was asked to do a series with Miffy but decided not to continue at some point because the serie didn't fit with the "Miffy-style". Then the producers of the series came up with Musti, which is just Miffy but then turned into a cat. He wasn't to pleased with this. He also mentioned Hello Kitty in the interview but said the creators of Hello Kitty at least gave him credits for the original idea and have admitted to have made Hello Kitty inspired by Miffy. So the creator of Musti (in my book) is the only dishonest person in this whole story. Sorry, your childhood sweetheart wasn't so sweet....

I agree 100%. Musti is the real star and H.K. is a blatant rip off of the adorable Musti. It is just obvious when you look at them (closely or far away). I think the creator of Musti ought to sue H. Kitty for billions that are rightfully owed to him!!!

I remember those Musti picture books well. I used to collect them. They were licenced by Women's Weekly magazine and he was called "Misty". When I was small, I used to compare Misti, Miffy, and Hello Kitty together sometimes to see who was copying the other.
Miffy rocks, and Hello Kitty rules for her accociation with cuteness and love. Misti isn't cute, his edges are too pointy and unround. Sanrio has the best animation series, such as the beautiful claymation Hello Kitty Stump Village.
To conclude this post, I agree with Geishabot. Musti kind of sucks, and Hello Kitty andMiffy are cuter, and awesomer.
